From Centralized to Decentralized
The energy system of the industiral age was one of elite energy sources and economies of scale that drove its centralization the rust being its hinging around large energy companies, power plants and refineries. Today energy is increasingly produced everywhere and transported in all directions in the power system as we shift from a centralized model to a more distributed model. This is certainly a much more complex model, as we move towards a decentralized networked architecture. |
From Linear to Nonlinear
The energy system of today is largely linear, creating a dead-end effect where energy is used, but not reused; the result is a lot of waste. A vast jump in the overall system's functionality can be gained not through changing or increasing energy input but by restructuring the system towards a nonlinear model where energy can be cycled and recycled across different levels of quality. Thus for every unit of energy inputted we can achieve many units of functionality. |
From Commodity to Service
We need to move away from thinking of energy as a commodity and towards looking at it as a service. This is a shift from our current paradigm, where we focus on the production of energy, to instead focusing on the actual outcome that it delivers, namely the service. Industrial age systems of organization created a model that is very much built around the producers pushing out products to passive recipients. This needs to be flipped on its head in order to place the end user's needs first and then working backwards from this. |
From Static to Dynamic
Over the coming years energy systems are going from a limited need for adaptation to a limited number of variables, to a much more adaptive and responsive system that can adapt to both supply- and demand-side variation. The utility of the future, the orchestra leader of the future, is going to learn how to balance an entirely different sort of grid - one where you have got very many inputs. |
Energy Platforms
Energy companies need to switch to becoming energy platforms, from providing energy to providing virtual energy, from power plants to virtual power plants. They must build platforms that can aggregate many producer sources, from large to small, and provide a single seamless interface. The simple ownership of the physical assets for production will increasingly become a commodity value and will shift to the capacity to manage complex energy systems through software and AI platforms. |
Circular Energy
The circular energy economy is a model where a key source of revenue is in closing loops between energy uses, so that they can deliver the same level of service with much less input. Open loops exist on all levels from the individual homeowner to an entire economy. On the micro-level closing loops means working with the end user to find and develop synergistic uses between their different demands. On a large industrial scale this involves developing what is called industrial symbiosis. Industrial symbiosis is a concept designed to describe and facilitate the development of sophisticated industrial systems in which multiple companies exchange by products to reduce energy consumption. |
Adaptive Smart Energy
Next generation energy systems will have intelligence at their core that will make them flexible and adaptive. Instead of centralized control systems making decisions, these platforms will be more like markets where the state of the system is defined by the interaction of many “smart" devices and systems. Next generation energy systems will be platforms for managing virtual power, intermediation markets that work as load balancing mechanisms. Using big data and advanced analytics, companies can transform consumer data into dynamic, time-of-use pricing for customers. |
